SIEL FAN SEA

In the spring of 2025, I spent two weeks in Hindeloopen at the invitation of the Siel fan Súdwest project, exploring the soul of Southwest Friesland. My work, Siel Fan Sea, is a visual interpretation of a wave from the former Zuiderzee. With this piece, I aimed to symbolically bring back the sea that vanished after the construction of the Afsluitdijk.

As a female artist, I deliberately focus on the craftsmanship of women throughout history, a group often overlooked. By exploring domestic art forms such as traditional dress, I seek to recognize and elevate the skill and artistry of these women. Siel Fan Sea consists of one hundred folded and starched ‘seandooken’ (sun cloths), each representing a stage of mourning in the 18th century. These cloths reflect the seven-year period of bereavement, during which women gradually changed the color of their clothing: from black, to blue, and finally back to red.

The work was accompanied by a video featuring looping macro shots of the present-day IJsselmeer.
