When my mother passed away, I was in charge of sorting out her clothes. I decided to embroider ‘mama’ into the hems of all her dresses. I filmed myself doing this for over a month. This process resulted in a few hour-long videos.

I find it important to be vulnerable as a creator, and to zoom in on detail. Sorting out my mother’s clothes was an integral part of my grieving process. My mother collected beautiful dresses all her life. It was part of her identity. By wearing each dress one last time and taking the time to embroider ‘mama’ in the hems, I made time feel tangible. After this work, I donated almost all of these clothes to charity. That was my mother’s wish. The work continues in the closets of others.
